SOMERSET COUNTY

Ductwork, Dryer Vents and Chimneys in Green Brook, NJ

Green Brook is a Somerset County township of 7,281 people at the 2020 census, spread over 4.42 square miles and named for the stream that rises in the Watchung Mountains and runs about 15 miles to the Raritan. Route 22 crosses it, and Washington Rock State Park sits on the First Watchung Mountain within its borders.

The township began in 1872 as North Plainfield Township, carved from Warren. North Plainfield split off as a borough in 1885 and Watchung in 1926, and what remained took the name Green Brook in 1932. Growth came in two bursts: the population roughly tripled in the 1950s, from 1,155 to 3,622, and Census Bureau estimates place about four in ten of the current homes in the 1990s and 2000s, when the count climbed past 7,000.

So most houses here belong to one era or the other. The 1950s houses run a basement furnace and a single trunk, which makes air duct cleaning a basement job. The newer houses often add a second system overhead, and up there air duct repair on crushed or sagging flex matters as much as the brushing. Natural gas heats more than nine homes in ten, by Census estimates, so furnace and water heater flues are part of the picture too.

Twenty to thirty years into the newer houses

A house finished in the 1990s or 2000s has reached the age when original parts start to show it. Attic flex loses its outer jacket and sags between straps, foil tape on the collars lets go, and the dryer transition hose behind the machine has been crushed more times than anyone counted. None of it shows from the living room, so a first service visit on one of these houses tends to find more than a dusty register.

Air duct repair on those runs means re-hanging the flex, sealing the collars with mastic and replacing any section that has split. Where the upstairs never held its temperature, air duct installation can add a return on the bedroom floor, which does more for comfort than cleaning alone. A long upstairs laundry run is the first place dryer vent cleaning pays off, and when the builder's route exceeds what the dryer maker allows, dryer vent installation shortens it.

The 1950s streets and their chimneys

The first-burst houses are smaller and simpler: a furnace in the basement, a rectangular trunk, branch runs between the joists. Seventy years on, the trunk seams have loosened, the return often draws straight from the basement, and the supply registers upstairs carry several coats of paint.

Many were built with a masonry chimney shared by the furnace and the water heater. Once the furnace moves to a sidewall-vented high-efficiency model, the water heater is left in a flue too big for its exhaust, and chimney repair with a properly sized liner is the usual answer. Chimney cleaning clears whatever the old flue has gathered, soot and nesting material included.

Along the Green Brook itself

The stream behind the township's name has its own flood record. Floods in June 1971 and August 1973 caused millions of dollars in damage and several deaths along the Green Brook and the Raritan, and Hurricane Floyd in 1999 brought more property damage and deaths to the Green Brook basin.

In a basement that has taken water, we separate what can be cleaned from what has to go: sheet metal usually stays, wet duct insulation does not. Mold treatment and removal covers the ducts and the air handler they connect to, and HVAC UV light installation on a coil in a damp basement helps between visits but does nothing about the water that got in.

What a visit in Green Brook involves

Most jobs come in off Route 22 or one of the county roads, 527 and 529, and we ask when booking whether the driveway fits the truck. The crew starts where the system starts: the basement in the older houses, the attic hatch in the newer ones. Dryer runs are traced from the machine to the hood, and on a two-story house we check the whole vertical length.

AMG is licensed and insured, and as a veteran owned company it keeps someone on the phone 8 AM to 8 PM, 7 days a week. The same crews cover Bridgewater, Middlesex and Warren, all of which border the township, so a visit is easy to fit in. Ask for a free estimate and tell us the decade the house was built.

Questions and answers

Our house went up in the late 1990s. Is a first duct cleaning due?

Probably, if nobody has opened the system since the builder left. Check the return grille and the first few feet of duct behind it; a gray coat of dust or leftover construction grit means yes. The attic side deserves a look too, since flex of that age often calls for repair more than cleaning.

Upstairs runs warmer than downstairs all summer. Could the ducts be the cause?

Frequently the return side is to blame. Many houses of that era have one large return downstairs and little or nothing upstairs, so the bedrooms cannot move their air back to the system. Adding a return, or fixing a disconnected one in the attic, usually matters more than cleaning.

Our basement flooded years ago. Could the ducts still be holding something?

They can. Insulation that got wet and dried in place can hold residue and odor, and a flex run that sat in water may still carry silt. We open the lowest runs and the return, and tell you which pieces can be cleaned and which should be replaced.

We light the fireplace a few times each winter. Does the chimney still need a yearly sweep?

Yes. The U.S. Fire Administration advises having chimneys and heating equipment cleaned and inspected every year. Light use still leaves deposits in a cool flue, and a yearly look also catches a cracked crown or a missing cap.
